Funding Sources

The RDPE is worth £3.9 billion nationally and is jointly funded by the European Commission and the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra) .

It highlights 4 priorities for rural development with a view to safeguarding and enhancing our rural environment and fostering competitive and sustainable businesses and thriving rural communities.

The majority of RDPE funds are allocated to improving the environment and this is being delivered by the Forestry’s Commission’s English Woodland Grant Scheme and Natural England’s Environmental Stewardship. The remaining funds are administered by Regional Development Agencies, who focus on the priorities that are most relevant to their region, as identified in their Regional Implementation Plans.
